The call for nominations is currently open for USGBC National Capital Region's 2017 Community Leader Awards (formerly called our Awards of Excellence). Since 2008, USGBC-NCR has annually recognized innovation and leadership in sustainable design, environmental stewardship, and community impact at our Midsummer Night's Green celebration and fundraiser. As we look forward to honoring this year's winners, we'd also like to take a moment to once again congratulate the exceptional people and projects we recognized at last year's event, which took place on July 21, 2016 at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC.
Three awards were given to LEED Projects in the National Capital Region that exemplify green building practices and principles:
LEED Project of the Year Award: Building Design and Construction, presented to VMDO Architects for Jefferson Houston PreK-8 School
LEED Project of the Year Award: Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance, presented to Cushman & Wakefield for the World Wildlife Fund Recertification
LEED Project of the Year Award: Interior Design and Construction, presented to Perkins + Will for the Whitman-Walker Health Center.
USGBC-NCR presented its 2016 Notable Green Building Project Award, which recognizes exemplary green building outside of the LEED system, to Galaxy Homes, Inc. for white(out)house.
USGBC-NCR's 2016 Sustainable Business of the Year Award honored a firm that inspires the local green building community. This award went to DPR Construction, a longtime supporter of USGBC National Capital Region that recently completed a new net zero office space in Reston, Virginia. USGBC National Capital Region awarded three 2016 Member of the Year Awards to recognize individuals who made significant contributions to our mission. These individuals are Fulya Kocak Gin, National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, (pictured below middle) our former board chair who has played an enormous role in transforming and driving forward our organization, and Jessica Long ,The JBG Companies, and Kim Pexton, Paladino and Company, (pictured below right) our Greenbuild Host Committee co-chairs, under whose enthusiastic leadership we showcased our region to the world during the 2015 Greenbuild Conference.
Finally, attendees of A Midsummer Night’s Green voted The Greenbuild Legacy Project–The Urban Food Studio the winner of the 2016 People’s Choice Award. The Urban Food Studio was nominated by the Capital Area Food Bank.
This year, we are excited to have added a number of new awards to our line-up. We are offering two types of awards, each of which has several categories: Project Awards, which honor exceptional high-performance buildings, and Leadership Awards, which recognize individuals and organizations helping to make more sustainable communities a reality in the DC metro area. Nominations are due by 5pm on Tuesday, June 6.
